Car emergency cards for autistic kids: Paramedic approved!
The Autism News
Many parents share the fear of having a car accident while their children are in the backseat. This fear is doubled when we consider how our child’s autistic behaviors may make his reaction to such an event scarier.
Who would speak for our children if we were injured and couldn’t speak for them? How would our autie child respond to an emergency in the car?

Changes in Walking and Balance Can be a Sign of Alzheimer's and Dementia
Alzheimer's Reading Room
Prior to my mother’s diagnosis of dementia she started scraping her feet on the ground, and started falling down. On one fall she broke her finger.
When my mother would fall, she could not get back up on her own. I now find myself wondering–how did she get up before I came to take care of her? I’ll never know the answer to this question.
I am convinced that my decision to take her into a gym, and put her on a treadmill made a remarkable difference. My mother has not fallen a single time in the last 4 years. Not once.
I suppose when I talk about exercise and the very positive effect it has on my mother’s over all well being–I make it sound like magic. It does seem magical to me the more I think about it.
I wish more people would try getting their older parents to walk on a treadmill five days a week. The benefits are remarkable.

Dementia 101
Brain Today
Based on the various interpretations I read in the press, there seems to be some confusion about the term dementia. …
So, in even simpler terms, being demented means that one’s mental faculties are impaired to a degree that interferes with their social and occupational function. For the purpose of most discussions, it really is as simple as that.

In Health Debate, the Oldest Voices Are Also the Faintest
The New Old Age Blog - The New York Times
The New York Times and other news media have lately been full of poll results on the reaction of the elderly to President Obama’s plans for a health care overhaul. Uniformly, the numbers show that the elderly, compared to other age groups, are worried about proposals to address the unsustainable increases in Medicare costs, to conduct effectiveness research on what medical care works and what doesn’t, and to reimburse doctors for routine end-of-life counseling.

Alzheimer’s Wandering: Why it Happens and What to do
Alzheimer's Reading Room
Wandering is among the most unsettling and even terrifying behaviors people with Alzheimer’s display. Often poorly clad, they leave safety at random hours and strike out into unknown territory, for no apparent reason. But this seemingly aimless activity usually does have a reason. It’s often an attempt to communicate after language skills have been lost.
